Andy,

Thanks, for organizing the trip! Figured I should get on the forum after showing up to the trip after Don told me about it.

I like the shots... I'm a bit distracted by the degree of polarization on bridal veil falls on the third shot, though... it's black (which is how it looks when you've dialed in maximum polarization, but it really draws my eye over).

I uploaded about 12 shots that I basically converted straight through to JPEG... Smugmug must be getting buried or be a little slow this evening, it's been processing for 45 minutes :wxwax

:clap Beautiful shots, Andy. Lesson learned about ND filter. Your water is beautiful. And fantastic exposure for that time of day at the Tunnel View, amazing you squeezed out that contrast!

Awesome Andy! The water in the first one is sooo dramatic!:clap :clap :clap :clap Very cool anticipating the needed long exposure for the water and compensating with the ND filter so that you would not blow out the sky.:thumb

Ahh Andy... these are excellent shots. My favorite is the third, the dynamic range you captured is fantastic - and you can really tell that the distagon lens kicked butt.

So, how is that 1ds treatin yah? Badly I hope ;)

http://williams.smugmug.com/photos/21584845-L-0.jpgOh wow. Just oh wow!

That place must be oh so photogenic. I really do have to make it out that way someday. I made it as far as Yellowstone and Salt Lake City, but not down to Yosemite or Zion. Someday, oh yes, someday..

Andy,

Super shots, as usual :thumb :thumb That Distagon is a keeper, IMHO :clap

I was so wiped out last night I barely got any pics edited :dunno I figured I'd give the others a chance to post first. Hope the flight was good and that you're feeling better.

Andy,

Great shots! Being as close to you guys as I was this weekend and not being able to get out there was just killing me!

You guys here (all of you grinners) have totally reignited my love for photography, and I would love to have been there to meet some of you in person.

So...where's the next trip?!?

Likewise, Andy. As is typical in these kinds of things, we never really had much of a chance to talk. Maybe next time... when you're chained to the ground and can't flit away! :flip

You did a fantastic job of conceiving and executing this event. Thank you for making my first visit to Yosemite such a memorable one. And I can't even believe you're talking about Zion for next year - the Colorado Plateau is tops on my list of uniquely American places to visit.

Thanks again, Andy.

I thought it would be interesting to post a photo I took within minutes of this one from about 3 or 4 feet from where Andy was standing. (Yes I could have cloned his shadow out, but chose not to for this) Note: For comparison this is about the best post processing I can do.

I think this demonstrates how it takes more than just being at the right place. You need to know what your doing to get that extra wow factor.

Actually I do have more. I didn't get any of Gus, but I did get these. I would have needed a 25 frame per minute camera to get the full effect of you dropping and then miraculously snaching, after several attempts (who knew you could move your hands so fast) the camera from certain death on the rocks.

Flowing water is one of those things I really like. You need about 1/2 second exposure to get a good blend, and 2-3 seconds make it look "foggy."

I saw an amazing photo from Craig Tanner once that looked like a bunch of rocks in the ocean enshrouded in fog. As it turns out, there was no fog at all -- it was just moving water, and a 30 second exposure. Distorting time can really change the look of things, and after some more time photographing, I've come to really prefer images that look different than they would if you "just took them."

Anyway, with water, it's almost impossible to blur water in bright daylight, without using a filter of some sort. Because even if you stop down to f/22 and use a polarizer, you'll get a 1/15 or 1/30 second exposure at ISO 100. So you break out the the filter (I have a 3 stop ND grad; I got a 1/6 to 1/2 second exposure, couldn't get longer) and blur time... it's quite easy to do and very much worth trying.

It should go without saying, of course, that a tripod is mandatory for this. I saw a lot of people trying to take pictures over the weekend without a tripod... it's 100% certain your landscape images will suffer greatly without one, because you lose so much flexibility in what you can do. When I started shooting from a tripod, the percentage of my shots that I really liked went from maybe 1 in 200 to 1 in 50, which ain't bad :wink

Susan

thank you very much, susan :D though i should say, the nd filter i used was not graduated, so it's only effect was to slow the water down and blur it :D the exposure i managed through proper raw conversion..

A good, heavy tripod is one of the finest optical improvements you can buy for your lenses. Modest lenses, used properly on a tripod, will frequently outperform expensive lenses that are heand held. And good tripod is a joy forever.:):

Very nice work Andy!
