Hi,

Jacob Rus has invented a new way of color-correcting images in Photoshop (would probably work in GIMP too), that is intuitive and easy to do.

I was so impressed I thought I'd write it up and share it with you.

Have a peek http://www.broadhurst-family.co.uk/lefteye/MainPages/jacobsladder.htm

I've included some PS actions so that you can experiment.

Here is the link to some examples Rus has done http://www.hcs.harvard.edu/~jrus/colortheory/jl.html

Thanks for sharing this technique. It really does deserve a huge "WOW!"

I'm looking forward to exploring some of your actions.

Here is a sample image where daylight and sodium lighting fooled the camera

one has never seen curves like this before! And it was virtually impossible using conventional corrections.

When Jacob first posted this method to the Dan Margulis Applied Color Theory List it caused some interest as well!

This is a case of "independent researchers" coming up with similar ideas. To be accurate and fair - I also have to give credit to an earlier source that Jacob did not know about when he originally posted his new method:

http://tech-slop.serveit.org/wiki/index.php?title=Curves_and_Linear_Light

In other forums (Photoshop Techniques and Ozone Asylum), the author linked above describes the use of the L channel as a mask for the curving of the L, a and b channels - which is even more similar to Jacob's method (the two methods are similar yet slightly different).

I have only given this limited testing, sometimes it works better than regular Lab mode curves, other times I have found the standard Lab curves better (although this may be due to having more experience with the regular way of curving).

Stephen Marsh
