Hey everyone.

Football and outside sports are (for the most part) wrapping up for the season. I thought it would be fun to start a "Post your best work" thread. So, here we go.

Please post your best image from the season. (What you consider the season may differ because of different sports seasons.) The only rule: Only one image per person. So, please post your BEST image.

I'll start. I'm interested in seeing what everyone else has!

This is my favorite from this football season. I know I'm somewhat partial to it because my son is the runner, but I like the experessions on the other players faces. I've tried cropping to get rid of the partial ref, but I didn't like the other parts of the image that went away.

This is one of my favorites from this football season.

I have plenty of shots of hillclimbers looping over backwards. They seem to do that a lot.:rofl I don't shoot in burst mode, so I usually just have one photo of each loop out.

A bit pricey, but he was fine. Didn't even feel the heat. Put in a backup engine, came back an hour or so later and qualified, and went to the semi finals on Sunday.

This particular photo was from the Superweek race in Waukesha the weekend before I believe. I have a bunch of shots from Kenosha as well, but just never bothered with uploading them to my smugmug site (www.jrowphoto.com (http://www.jrowphoto.com)) as it was way past the season when I opened my smugmug account. One of my better shots from this years United Dog Agility Association Cynosport Dog Agility World Championships in Scottsdale AZ. This Border Collie is looking like he's going to leave the see-saw before it hits the ground which is a big no-no. I like it because it shows the effort by the Japanese handler to try to keep the dog on the board and the focus on the dog's eyes is good.

I *hope* these count, as they're winter sports and they're from the beginning of this year (ie the end of their seasons)... but figure skating's new season just started (and I won't get to go to a major event this year unless I get a buttload of money dropped in my lap in the next few weeks, unlikely) and the sled dog races start at the beginning of January (if there's snow). But I wanted to play along! :)

Which one to offer? While I have many more dramatic, this image, which was published in New England Runner last month, is my choice. It was shot during a tropical rain storn and was so dark in the woods that I shot at ISO3200 and the lens wide open - I was up against the laws of physics. This is cross-country running at it's best :) Hope you enjoy.

SirGeorge (http://www.dgrin.com/member.php?u=26203)

I think your cross country shot is outstanding. I love the way the background runners have just the right amount of bokeh, and at the same time they are spaced in a way that creates a wonderful V pattern that balances the main subject. And as a magazine shot, it looks ideal for a cover shot, with just enough open area at the top for the title and also open area at lower left & right for additional fill text. Yeah, if I'm the editor that's my cover shot :thumb

I love this photo. You know why, you took a sport I have no interest in and totally drew me in and I am loving it.

Alot of us are good photographers, Great photograhpers can take any subjects and bring the viewer in, even if they were not interested before.

Thank you, I appreciate your comment a lot!

Hi Pink, not Steve, but perhaps I can help. I find the two keys to panning are the obvious one of shutter-speed and the less obvious "follow-through".

Shutter-speed depends on speed of the subject, focal length, and distance to subject. Perhaps a good place to start with mopeds is around 1/60. Start tracking the subject prior to where you plan on snapping the image, keep tracking while you press the shutter release, and keep tracking along with the moped as the shutter releases and after. Many do a great job tracking, but stop the pan when they press the shutter release and that blurs the image. As you're panning, try to keep the little focus reticle on the same small part of the subject, i.e. the rider's face or helmet. This will keep the subject as stable in the frame as possible.

Here's an example (and my second favorite shot of the season):

I like the idea but if I may make a suggestion: blend the edges of the images together - you can see the technique on this collage, even though it is a dog!! http://digitalphotoconcept.smugmug.com/gallery/4299231_ASyW9#254842627_BsvRT-A-LB

In this way it will look more like a single image. The text book way to blend images together is to use the gradient tool on the edge of each image and then blend them together - the quick and easy way to to use the eraser tool set to soft edge and make the brush very large and run that down the edge of each image, You may need to add a background layer to take out any gaps in the blended edged - use a green sample d from your image

Also depending on how anal you ( I am extremely anal , as you can see...sorry) I would line up the the yellow of e fence to make sure it is a straight line and then I would use the clone tool to make the edge of the sand one continuous line.

Thanks for sharing and I hope you find this constructive and not critical.

George

I took This shoot during a session on the north of Spain, country where i live in. In that time i was shooting with a D2Xs and the 10,5mm into an AQUATECH PRO HOUSING. That day the waves took me out of the shooting point into the sand for several times, so i had to swim into the break point across the current again and again. I was thinking to decline when i had this opportunity and i shoot for three times. The second was this. Hope youŽll like it. Finally it was a very productive shot for me, the most of this year i think...

It's coming up to the end of the rugby union season in Europe. Northampton Saints have one game to go and I am on tenterhooks waiting to hear whether I have got my accreditation for the European Challenge Cup Final.

So these are my favourites from the season so far:

These are shots from my son's (the catcher) regional playoff game. The only issue is that I was shooting from behind the foul ball netting so there is a little ghosting of the net lines in the shots. The shots kind of go together so it's hard to pick which one to use.

Jason I had a flash off on the rocks to his front left. The flash didnt fire but luckily I was underexposing to get the BG good. I shot raw so I duplicated the file and bumped up the exposure and stacked that with the darker image on top as a multiply layer. Then I brushed the rider and foreground out of the darkened image so it would be brighter.

Nice work!! one day this noob will own zoom a zoom lens :)
Thanks. While I wouldn't want to go out without my 70-200, lately most of my favorite work has been with shorter length lenses. Pick a location right on the inside of a tight turn, and get as low and close as you can. I was almost flat on my back for this shot.
http://pbb.smugmug.com/photos/576077034_qJXmB-L.jpg

It can work for road races and crits, as well, here by Michael Kirk:
http://mlkimages.smugmug.com/photos/539266939_DNqiW-M.jpg

Obviously, a good flash helps. Another good location to shoot cycling with a short lens is on a decent hill....they're going slower and have that wonderful look of suffering on their faces. Once again the key is getting way down low--when climbing, cyclists tend to look down, and the helmet tends to block their faces on higher-angle shots.

I shot a 50 team league this spring and I can tell you that is a fanstastic shot. It kinda looks like film, and it has a great old-timey Norman Rockwell feel, imo. You could easily clone out the flagpole and flag if you want it gone.

HI...my first sports post here. I'm a newbie lurker coming out of the shadows!

This QB fumbled on the sac, but, lucky for him, he was out of bounds before he lost control of the ball. I liked the flying grass and the hands in this one.

Awesome shots posted here. I've enjoyed wandering through this thread.

Here's mine. My son's coach told him to be more physical. He took it to heart! I don't think the kid in the striped shirt knew what hit him.

I'm still not entirely thrilled with the exposure on his face though.

I've not said too much about the multiple picture posts. But please, the thread is for your best shot--please post only one--especially if you've already posted the same pix in another thread.

Thanks,
Ian

New to smugmug - here's one from my vacation in the Philippines. The race was done right beside a freeway and a mall. Resulted in some interesting backgrounds...
Shot with the 70-300DO wide open, other images shot with 28-135mm, "slow lenses" by sports standards but IQ isn't bad...

The Heineken Cup is the biggest club rugby competition in Europe... last week Northampton Saints beat Munster in a thrilling match. I shot this with a Nikon D3, 70-20mm lens at f2.8 and ISO 6400.

Shane Geraghty took a quick tap penalty catching the Munster defence unawares. I fortunately spotted it and got my shot of the season so far...

This little guy makes the entire photo. He is the shortest on the field and with the #73, he plays the line. That's what I call courage.
