Nothing was coming close enough and this Great Egret was just standing there out of range, tormenting me, as they do. So I decided I'd give it a try with this set-up.
20D
EF400/5.6
Kenko 2x
Kenko 1.4x
Tripod
crossed fingers
RAW ISO 800
1/640th
f16 (effective)
Here's the result full frame. It doesn't stand scrutiny at 100% pixel but I think acceptable for web and smallish prints.

Hey Howard,
Those birds do know how to make one miserable. They know just how far enough to stay away from allowing you a good shot and if you get too close they are gone in a flash. Congrats on besting that egret. :clap You did what you had to do to get the shot. :thumb

Heh, I'm surprised it didn't fly over and sit right next to you, knowing once again it would be "out of range"... :D
Like Harry said, definately worth it! :thumb
