Mini Challenge #14 Portraits with Soul…

Not just any portrait, I want to see and feel the emotion being expressed in the person’s expression, I want to be able to see their soul, I want to look at the portrait and have it grab me and hold my attention…

The portrait can be a street shot, candid, posed or studio whatever you like…Comments are Welcomed... If you see a shot that says something to you, please tell that person about it. Ask about the processing, whatever you like. Lets get some conversation going. Lets have some fun.
This challenge will run from Wednesday, October 29 (today), through Wednesday, November 12 at 1900 CST.

GENERAL RULES

1. Have fun sharing and seeing what others share!
2. The host supplies a topic and you post 1-3 images. The host judges the winners (1st, 2nd and 3rd) and is not eligible to enter.
The 1st place winner then chooses the next topic, judges the winner and passes on the baton to the new champion.
3. Any photo you’ve taken is eligible, regardless of when taken or camera used.
4. Any amount of post-processing is allowed. However, it is helpful if you list your camera and lens along with your photo.
You may comment on other contestant's images. If you want someone to leave you some critique or criticism, put an asterisk (*) next to the title of the image.
5. * The winner has up to three days (72 hours) to begin a new mini-challenge, or the honor goes to the #2 finisher and so forth.

Guidelines:
1. Enter 1-3 photos and put them in a single post.
2. Either embed your image in the thread or, if you must, supply a link to it. Keep in mind, however, most people don't want to click to open photos hosted elsewhere (i.e. on your website).
3. Also try and resize your photos prior to posting so they're sized appropriately for viewing without having to scroll (~800 pixels on the longest side works best.)
4. Give each image you enter a title.
5. Enjoy discussion with members about their images, don't let this just be an entry thread!
6. Don't be hesitant, share'em and enter!

nice shots so far... looks like Linda went back in time... :scratch

Faces are good but not necessarily required for the image to be considered a portrait... Dave's shot of the wall is a great example...

Fun topic!

First I thought it would be hard to find much to show, but then I remembered this little girl I met on the bus, her name is Sanna and she was heading to the swimming hall with her mom and sister.

Which sort of reminded me of my favourite street shot. It's from a vacation to Prague, shot on the tram number 17 while riding back to town. We'd got on it simply because the line went off our map - just to see what's out there you know.

Three shots with soul. I hope you agree. Comments and Criticism always welcome.

1. Nan Lucy. (Opinion and Passion)

Lucy has eighty-seven years of life experience and is always happy to share it with anyone.

2. Namibian Boys. (Cheeky, Defiant, Preoccupied)

Three brothers in rural Northern Namibia. For me, the shot captures an essence of boyhood at each of these three ages.

3. No Lower Gears Left. - (Pain and Determination)

Hey guys/girls, I am sorry...I really don't get out much. Most of my shots (pretty much all) are around the firehouse...I hope you don't mind.

This guy is really quiet. Great guy and works really hard as you can see. I did a little HDR type thing with this shot.

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w319/andreauk007/hdr1.jpg

This guy asked for a portrait, so this is what we came up with. Lighting was a nightmare.

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w319/andreauk007/Brian1mailable.jpg

This guy is really sweet, always making people laugh.

Well, first time I have posted anything here, image wise (maybe even text wise). Here goes

#1 Anticipation (a dog happened to wander into the park where the shoot was taking place, the child spotted it and got all excited. I just happened to catch the anticipation on the child's face at that moment. It was instantly over as the child ran over to the dog and started petting it) lens, 70-200Lf2.8 body, 350d

http://i510.photobucket.com/albums/s348/stirinthesauce/56_resize_finish.jpg

#2 Love for Daddy (the child is enamored with her father and loved any and all attention from him) Lens, 70-200Lf2.8 body, 350d

http://i510.photobucket.com/albums/s348/stirinthesauce/IMG_6057_resize_finish.jpg

#3 Without a Net (the artist was at the apex of his solo and just let it all out. The crowd went wild behind me!) lens 70-200Lf2.8, body 20d

I can't believe I missed the "view from above" challenge, that's my specialty. This is actually my first challenge. It is also my first attempt at any portraits other than my children. I'll bet you can even guess when they were taken. ;)

1. "Exhausted" *
My son after walking with his baby sister through the entire town. Candid in a friends home, I changed the background. On camera flash covered with a 'grocery' plastic bag. Canon XT, 35-70 off my old film rebel. (same camera and lens for each photo).

http://troyraymond.smugmug.com/photos/407741216_w4pHn-L.jpg

2. "Haunted" *
Located at the only home that offers children fun and games in our town, he was kind enough to hold still for about 10 seconds. ;) Shot using available light. Crop only.

http://troyraymond.smugmug.com/photos/407740723_uewWJ-M.jpg

3. "Vamp" *
Cornered this victim at the local funeral home handing out candy. On camera flash. Face and skin tone untouched.

Hi all,

I really liked the fireman shot made by "Hot_Shot", by the way. Great mood.

Anyway, here's my first submission. Hope it's OK with the rules :)

This was taken at Jerusalm, Israel. Specifically, at the Western Wall (said to be the most sacred place for Jews world wide). It was the day before Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Day_of_Atonement)) when Jews pray for forgiveness. I think they stayed there all night. This was taken at 2am when we visited the place to get a feel for the special atmosphere.

Three candid photos with emotion

The torture of having an older sister!

Agony
http://roadrunes.com/photo/d/4363-3/living-hell-web.jpg

Grumpy's Machine (that's what the sign in front of his "fixed" engine said (fixed as in "stationary" not repaired!)

http://roadrunes.com/Octoberfest-2004/images/PA020040.jpg
(oddly enough he was anything but Grumpy, we had a very nice chat about his machines), but he sure looks it in this shot! :lol

Perhaps this says even more by the complete lack of emotion in their faces, but I was really taken by hers (simply because it was so unusual, nothing to do wit beauty or ugliness, just so different) and the way they passed in quiet solitude, together yet alone..

A lifetime of Familiarity

definitely has emotion, as to whether is could strictly be called a "portrait" is another matter since a portrait is by definition a likeness showing the subject's face, but its a very emotional photograph none the less. Nicely done.
