I at least classify this as 'technique', but is there a WB 101 doc or thread around here? I've got everything else in the camera OFF of automatic (ISO, etc), except for the white balance.

You can shoot in RAW and white balance later in your Raw converter of choice. Or you can set a custom white balance at the time of exposure with a number of different tools - Exposdisc, BalanceBetter reflector, WHiBal card, or a SpectraSnap filter are a few of the tools to be found.

When shooting jpgs with a custom white balance, proper exposure is critical. If you exposure is off by more than 1/2 stop, your white balance may vary also.

If you are interested in total manual control and are shooting under a consistent lighting situation, you can set a custom white balance off of a card made for setting white balance and fine tune it more if you shoot RAW during post processing.
