I bought my new camera over the weekend, JVC GZ-HD10U, that records AVCHD and saves to .MTS files.
I upgraded my sumgmug subscription to Pro.
Now... HOW do I get .MTS files uploaded? I've tried everything, but no luck.
Thanks for the support!

A few more details. I was finally able to upload an .MTS file using the old faithful uploader, however the video is a green mess. See here:

I am afraid that we cannot convert the .MTS files directly. They are not one of the supported file formats. You will need to edit the files and export them to a supported format, or use a converter before upload.
The MPEG Streamclip converter works well. You can get it from www.squared5.com

Thanks Doc. I'll check out the converter. Its a dissapointment that they're not handeled natively. I guess I didn't understand my new camera as I thought it saved in native AVCHD.

Okay, I'm still learning here. My camera does indeed save in AVCHD format, as an .MTS file, which is an H.264 format. Only smugmug does not support this file type, as you indicated. Thats surprising since don't you convert everything to H.264 anyway?
Either way, I guess that's my feature request for the week. Please support .MTS files. :)
Thanks again.

Thanks for letting us know. I am not sure if it might be a licensing issue or why we do not support it. I look at MTS and M2T similar to camera raw files. Even my raw footage straight from the vid camera that is .mov and ready for upload goes into my editor. I almost always find something that needs to be edited anyway. I then export out to a supported format.

Just wanted to give this a little bump in support of AVCHD (in my case M2TS from a Canon HG10) support. I appreciate all the philosophical arguments about editing, but I'm no artist and sometimes I just want to take the footage right out of the camera and upload it without a lengthy transcoding step.

Same here, I have Sony's latest HD camcorder and the files are .mts, I wouldn't compare them to raw files since most software video payers such as windows media player recognise them. Also they are recognized by other video sharing sites such as motion box. It would make things much easier if these formats were supported on Smugmug.

Yeah, there are some point & shoots coming out that are doing HD in AVCHD (MTS files), so I think in a year or two it'll probably become the new standard for HD across the board. Hopefully it will, getting saved in H.264 on still cameras is such a lossy format.
I agree though. It would be nice to play these files straight on your desktop, upload them without export, etc. Theres already a lot of players that can do it now (VLC, Toast, etc) but the big ones like Quicktime, WMP, etc still do not. I think thatll change though.

Kudos to Microsoft for adding native support for mts files in Windows 7. No need to convert or do anything, I just open directly in Windows 7, the picture is glorious.
I can even edit now in Windows Live Movie Maker (after adding a codec), but sadly can't save back as mts.
Would still love to be able to upload mts directly to smugmug.

I have a new Panasonic Lumix ZS which I currently use on a trip in NYC. I save in mts format because the files are significantly smaller than .mov.
It would be nice if smugmug accepted this mts format because all I want is to upload the short clips for family and friends while traveling. I'll do all the video edititing once back at home, if necessary. Using a conversion program, such as Handbrake, is really painful because it takes a long time for the process, especially on a laptop.
Maybe smugmug could license the technology to do the conversion. I'm willing to pay a reasonable extra fee for this feature. Frankly I don't need HD support because the playback is slow on most home PCs, but if this is what it takes to get mts on smugmug, I may go this route.

Don't forget about our feature request list: http://smugmug.uservoice.com/
The more support we get for things like this, the more that it will be considered. I am not sure what issues are involved with adding MTS support.

what a hassle to sign up for that voice thing. forget about it.
Just look at how many views this thread has and you can see the need.

We do take in to consideration the number of posts requesting things. But, thread views are not necessarily indicative of a need, some people stumble into threads just to see what is discussed.
That is why we created the uservoice page. It allows folks to vote on what they consider important. But, there is no requirement that you use it. Thanks for the input. We really do appreciate it. :thumb

Thanks for your reply, but it's not the views that should be counted, but an explicit "Vote" button on the thread. 'uservoice' seems like a barrier. Let the actual account holders vote for what's important to them without forcing anyone to open yet another account on yet another site. I believe that 'uservoice' is the 3rd site associated with smugmug support, in addition to the wiki and dgrin.

I know little about these things but I did have the same problem with my Sony camcorder, .MTS format. This thread was where I discussed this:
http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=98179
And the bottom line solution, which may not work for the Canon format, was this:
MPEG4 - which I made in PE7 by saving in the H.264 1080i format which produces a MPEG4-related something or other but as a m2t extension, and then RENAMED the m2t extension to mp4, and that successfully uploaded into SmugMug.

I found out that Koyote Soft Free AVCHD Converter (http://www.koyotesoft.com/indexEn.html) does a superb and fast job on the .mts files from Panasonic. I convert to .mp4, 30 fps, 6000 Kbps, and even my old laptop is usable for the task.

I tried that and another one and neither of them worked. I can't remember what the problem was, I think it hung, looking like it was processing, but it stayed in that position for a day, so I killed the program. How long is it supposed to take to process something like a 3 minute file?

Wow. I just assumed that Smugmug would support this popular HD format, and upgraded to a Pro account. A few days later, when I went to actually upload my first video, I was VERY disappointed. I canceled my Pro account, and dropped back down to a Power account. If I find a good video host, then I'll probably drop back down to a basic account. I created a uservoice account (easy, but why not let me use my Smugmug login or my dgrin login?) and voted for this feature (http://smugmug.uservoice.com/pages/17723-smugmug/suggestions/261734-support-for-mts-video-files?ref=title). I like Smugmug, and I don't want to leave. I'm looking at Motionbox (http://www.motionbox.com) for video hosting (they support mts files!) at the moment, but I really do want a place to host ALL of my media. At this point, I'll be staying with Smugmug for picture hosting, but looking out for another service that fits all of my needs. Hopefully Smugmug will be that service, but I'm not holding my breath.

I had the same problem, I tried a million different format conversions, and yet it turned out to be so simple (using a Sony camcorder that saves in .m2ts):
Thread is here:

I just upgraded to Pro for the same reason that many have - so I can upload HD videos, which are pretty much the standard in consumer electronics now in 2010. I was tired of having to go through the edit/transcode workflow everytime I wanted to get a video from camera to Smugmug quickly.
I wish I had read this thread before I upgraded - appears that I cannot simply dump the ubiquitous .mts files from my video camera to Smugmug, and that I still need to trudge through a transcode workflow. I'll be downgrading before my renewal comes up if this limitation remains.

I've been waiting over a year for them to add .mts and .mts2 support. In the description it says it can handle pretty much any video format thrown at it. These are very standard HD AVCHD file formats used by Sony and Panasonic that most video websites can handle. I don't know what the deal is with Smugmug and why this isn't a priority with them.

I still had to use Old Faithful to get it to take them, the normal "simple" one ignores them.

FYI: I emailed the support heroes, and they have now fixed the uploader to recognize MTS files and updated the wiki documentation. They don't know if they will be adding M2TS (native format out of Panasonic).

I'm giving it a try right now. We'll see if it works. The thing I dislike most about it is you can't see the upload progress.

Yeah, I just tried it on one of the smaller files in the batch. Calculating how much time it should take is just some simple math. Half the time progress bars aren't right anyhow...

I think I have resolved my issue. A couple things were happening: 1. Some of my videos were just over 10 minutes and I didn't realize it. 2. I didn't realize SM was performing maintenance overnight several times recently, which is when I was trying to do the bulk of my uploading.
