I live nearby the Alliance airport, and the show usually comes around this time of year. I was determined to find a good vantage point to get the sun at my back, and found a great spot southwest of the runway along a local road. C & C is optional, I just like sharing pics of these awesome planes and pilots!

Well Bob to be completely honestly with you I don't see anything to C&C on these. They are fantastic and some of the best I have seen (and I was in the Marines for 26 years and have seen quiet a few!!!). Thank you for sharing them. They are very bright and clear. What camera and lens were you using?

Very nice lighting. #5 demonstrates the dynamic range nicely.

Hi Jester,
Thanks for the comments - it was a fun day for sure.
I was using the D300 and my go-to lens, the 70-200 2.8 VR. I tried the TC-17E II as well, but it degraded the quality too much. Curiously I use the TC all the time for youth football and get great results, but for some reason not on this day shooting up into the sky...

Hey BlueHoseJacket,
Not showing off, just sharing results from an awesome show. This was my first airshow with the D300 and the 70-200 and I wasn't sure what I would get. These planes were very close to us as they passed overhead, much closer to us than the spectators at the show. We were right at the end of the runway and they would kick these planes into these incredible hard banks and zoom either right over us or right in front of us. It was l-o-u-d!
Your shots are great as well - nothing to be ashamed of! I guarantee you that your shots are head and shoulders above what most spectators got that day. Hey, at least you got the over/under shot - I kept missing the shot because I was chimping! LOL
Have a great day...

I admit to the sin of envy. Pilots should be not allowed to have that much fun and get paid for it (except when they are being shot at). :D
Wonderful photos too, so nice and crisp and detailed (more envy..sigh...).

That's some really nice work, Bob! I like them a lot. I was at a number of air shows over the summer, and I don't think I had the sun behind me once. You have some great captures here!
