I was told that drop down menus are NOT search engine friendly.
Is this true and if it is, what would one suggest a Smugmug Pro use for navigation in it's place?
TIA,
Markjay

First off, it depends on how you are doing the drop-downs. If you're doing them with CSS and DIVs (like Smugmug tutorials show for pull-down menus in the navbar), then they've probably already been indexed by Google for quite awhile.
If you are doing them using <form> elements, then according to these postings #1 (http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2008/04/crawling-through-html-forms.html) and #2 (http://www.vertical-leap.co.uk/blog/Google-Crawling-Through-Forms-and-Drop-Downs-SEO-Effects.asp), it looks like Google is now even going to be indexing and following links in form elements on most sites.
