Well after an ealry morning shoot on the cliffs of Bona Vista Newfoundland, I came across this horse basking in the early morning sunshine.

Bring on the whip

My only nit about the photo is, were is the light?
I can see the shadows for great side lighting that would light up the
horse and fence and add alot of drama to the photo.

I'd love to see this photo in color. I feel you will see some of that morning sunlight then. Can you share that with us?

Well its pretty obvious where the light is coming from, are you saying that
there isnt enough light on the horse and fence ?

Just trying to interpret your input on this one..

Cheers

Dave

Dave,

Stunning. I love the subtlety of the fence, the clouds (or fog) right above the horizon. The oscar for "best supporting role in a Dave Clee photograph" in my mind actually goes to the moon.

That is my only nit. I'd love to see the moon larger and closer to the horizon. I know that is rare in early morning shots, so mine may be a unrealistic dream, but a dream none-the-less.

Hi Dave

Yes, This photo looks like it is in twilight, which looks great and stands
very well on its own merit. I just thought the suns side lighting would
have made the horse and fence pop alot more.

Gotcha...I could see how it would be taken as a twilight shot..

I think the color version of it will give it that early morning light look.

I tried them both really liked the B&W version better...

I agree the B&W version has more impact. Fantastic image.

I like the B&W version better. It imparts a bit more magic to the shot. I'd also consider cropping the right side about 10%. I wish there were more dramatic clouds in the sky, but you work with what you got.
This is a fine photograh.

I like the color better, but I do like the BW one to.

In the color one I see more of the grass which to me makes the horse stand out more. I like how the sun is on the fence to. Also..in the BW verison I thought the horse looked so loney which could be the perception that you wanted to present. If so...it worked :D

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I can tell you that when I framed the shot I was thinking black and white. It was something about the isolation out there that lead me down that path. So b/c of that b&w is the one I like the best.
Of course the color one has the look and feel of that morning, as there really was not much done to the colors PP..So its also nice to see that one as well.
In the end though, its a satisfying shot b/c I was able to capture it and make it look the way I had envisioned.

Thanks again.

Nice, I think the b/w is better, more moody.

Hello,

I agree that the B&W versions looks more interesting, but I think your B&W conversion is a little flat.

Here's the histogram from the color image

http://www.efines.net/images/fm/histo_color.jpg

and from the B&W

http://www.efines.net/images/fm/histo_1.jpg

You can see that there isn't much data at all on the right half of the B&W histogram.

Doing a conversion with a red filter and playing around a little with the levels gives this histogram

http://www.efines.net/images/fm/histo_2.jpg

which yields an image that looks like

http://www.efines.net/images/fm/horse_2.jpg

There is also some vignetting in the upper corners. I'm not keen on that, but some folks are, so that's just a matter of taste.

OTW I think it is a pleasant image.
