Would you define subtle for me? I'm not sure I'm getting you.

Ric,
The color balance adjustments you have made are very effective and believable. Do you do this using kelvin color temp and hue, or do you start with different wb settings and go from there?
I assume you're shooting RAW?
Cheers

RAW...and temp-hue...with more contrast for cool and less for warm.
I've got a trial of Lightroom 2...so I've been giving it a workout. Gotta say that the more I use it and realize what can be done the more I think my wallet is going to be three hundred bucks lighter.
Maybe it's my imagination, but I think that images that are cropped in raw and then exported to jpeg contain more detail than cropped jpegs.:dunno

The second image is outstanding. :clap I am seeing some haloing on the heron's back in the first capture. Do you sharpen selectively?

That's not a sharpening halo...it's me not being careful enough when I cloned out a branch that was the same brightness as the one he's perched on.

When you have trouble getting the whole bird in the frame and have a little room left for composition you realize that with photography it's always something. :nod

Wonderful captures! Great detail, color, and composition. I especially like the second one. Something about it is very compelling. I think it's the nice range of tones. Very cool.

That second one ranks right up there with anything I've ever done.

That may be, but I personally love the pastel blue pink bokeh in the first.

nice close-ups... these little guys can be hard to approach, though i've had some pretty good luck getting within 15 feet or so of them. i like the "warm" version... brings out the coloring better.
