Golden Lion Tamarin

this is not an easy animal to photographically capture at the Bronx Zoo. This fella moves very quickly, often hides and constantly subjected to a dismall yellowish light. He is behind a filthy glass. Ive been told its nearly impossible to get a "professional" image of this cutie. If anybody else has tried ( especially at the Bronx Zoo ) id love to see what they have come up with.


The golden lion tamarin, one of the world's most striking and rarest mammals, is so-called because of the beautiful mane of silky golden hair that frames its face. The fur is a lustrous golden colour, but the tail and forepaws may be brown or black. The digits are long and delicate with claw-like nails, which are perfectly adapted to forage for small prey items. Males are typically larger than females, but otherwise there are no major differences between the sexes.

Wow! You're right, it would be very difficult to capture and get good results
esp. with reds and oranges, not enough contrast for details. You did a excellent job.:thumb

The weather has been really crappy around here and I'm itching to get back to the zoo again.

I did find out that Pittsburgh has a huge aviary though. An hour drive for me.:D

If by "professional" they mean capturing the monkey doing something extra-ordinary, like smoking, or reading the paper then they are right. If they mean an excellent shot (especially given the circumstances) then they are wrong. :clap

I think Peter Dumont would LOVE this one, and he would say something funny...:D

what the problem is - is that its so dark in there!!! your looking at ISO 1600, shutter speed 1/80 s. i think im lucky to get what i did but id like to see others..... i know Andy has been in there - he must have something ( not to put him on the spot though ) .....

thanx Allen, i think the colors are slightly off, but ive scoured the internet for examples of zoo photos of this tamarin and there arent many "nice" ones to be found...

That's a very nice shot!

Might I suggest a custom white balance? Maybe that would help in this
situation? Just a thought.

Beautiful animal indeed and seriously endangered to boot. You have an exceptional capture of yours there

I managed these 2 of the one that lives at the Santa Ana CA. Zoo. This one lives in conditions that are equally non photo friendly. While there is no glass and he dos have natural tree filtered light he lives in an enclosure with a very tight 1/2 inch steel mesh for walls. There is a fence that lies between the path and the enclosure making it impossible to get right up to the mesh which creates for a very tricky focal point through the mesh to get it to defocus.

I also belive this animal is actually a bit ill, he had a very running nose and was quite lethargic but he finally turned around and gave me a brief moment to get these.

ISO1600? I just bought my first camera, the Sony DSC-F838. I'm getting it on Mon. I am starting to think I should've gotten the Digital Rebel XT. I'll never be able to get that high ISO. But, I guess for my first camera, I shouldn't worry too much.
Anyway, that is a great picture. Very beautiful animal. Thanks for sharing.
