A while back there was some discussion about "Royalty Free Music". Rather than discuss the merits of "how" you purchase music, I'd rather discuss music that I have found that is easy to purchse and use for both video production and, possibly, web sites.
I use Gene Michael Productions Inc., GMP Music library

I find their purchase methods easy (they have at least 5 methods to purchase music) their products excellent and their service nop-notch.
A lot of their music is designed as music-under so it can be played at almost any level.
Whether you want full themes or short themes or broadcast-length or tags and stingers, these people have been able to deliver. I've even heard their music at Disney and on the radio.

So what is your favorite source for production music? (Legal and ethical only please.)

When I was with WSU, we got all of our rights given to us by BMI / ASCAP....this included the rights to use music on Websites, to record our opera's and musicals', students recitals (unless a student was fortunate enuff to be able to do his/her own original music) and faculty recitals....... and we also did about a months search for ROYALTY FREE MUSIC and 99.9999% was really shite to the max........but when working for the cheapness of state govt sometimes you have to work with real shite or the work doesn't get done...........

I have to say my favorite is Shaun Paul Productions.
He is so great at the emotional/ inspirational music (he plays cello, but has all the other instruments as well) and does royalty free licensing to photographers slideshows and streaming for websites and stuff.

I haven't actually gotten the licensing, but plan on it. Best album- Everlasting. I have nearly worn out that music for listening to while editing, though. It emotes, plain and simple.

The other tip that I have used is that I friends that are musicians, so I ask them if I can use their stuff. I have even done trade out of my skills for their skills - definitely not photographic skills in my case. You also might want to consider if you have a local college that has a music program to see if any of the students might want to do a work for hire for you. You own the rights and they get experience.

Many of the composers who write royalty free music also post their music on the larger music download sites like www.royaltyfreemusic.com (http://www.digitalgrin.com/www.royaltyfreemusic.com) or http://www.productiontrax.com/. The nice thing about using one of these sites is that there is a huge number of music and sound effect files to choose from, so you can typically find something that you are looking for.

My favorite source for production sound is Digital Juice. There are a lot of options and you can actually re-mix the music to personalize it (drums too harsh for your needs? no problem, remove them). The only downside is that they don't have a way to just pay for and download one track - you have to buy the DVD sets.
