My first tries... I haven't been around so I hope these haven't already been done. :) I can't decide... which one jumps out at you?

I love #1 !! It has great color, sharpness, DOF, WOW.
#3 is a great shot too for the texture and contrast.
I would like #4 better with a little more DOF.
Great work.

I agree with wholenewlight. I'd go for 1 or 4.

I think they're all great images! For this challenge, however, I think #1 works the best. I also love the lighting, depth of field, and arrangement of the matches. Great work!

Thank you, I think I'll keep #1 as the best contender for now... I found a better straw version, if anyone is willing to compare. :)

I like the composition of that second straw photo better. The location of the red straw makes for an interesting composition. More of the straws are in the same plane and thus in-focus with the limited depth of field. I also prefer the lighting that results from the more straight-on view - light around the periphery and darker in the center. I also felt that there was a bit too much white-space in the first one and the direction of the straws made my eye end up there. Overall a nice job! So how did you set this shot up?

I simply tied the straws together with a rubberband and set them on our counter, which is white. I made sure the background was also white, so the backs of the straws were facing the wall... the lighting is all the sun coming from our open door. With the strong light and added contrast, any definition between the counter and the wall dissapeared.
Thanks for the detailed thoughts!
