View Full Version : 2nd Custom Domain possible?

I have 2 versions of my custom domain registered. One is with a .com and the other is the .net version. I redid the DNS on the primary .com version to point at domains.smugmug.com last night. Is it possible to also get the .net version to point to my smugmug galleries as well? I have tried having the second one (.net) point at the first one (.com), but as that is pointed to Smugmug I am just ending up at the Smugmug front door with the .net one as it apparently is not in the Smugmug database as I only have room for one Domain entry there.

Any way to make this work?

Thanks,

Gary

Not sure this is what you need, I found it, still haven't tried it. ;)

It took me a long time to get this to work but this is how you set it up:

Set up for yourcom.com

Forwarding: Disabled

A Record
Host: @
Points to: 208.79.45.23 (SmugMug's IP)

CName
Host: www
Points to: domains.smugmug.com

Set up for yournet.net

Forwarding: http://www.yourcom.com (No Masking)

A Record:
Host: "@" (No Quotes)
Points to: 64.202.189.170 GoDaddy's IP

CName:
Host: www
Points to: "@" (No Quotes)

This works at GoDaddy but I can't vouch for any other registrar.

Hope this helps

Thanks. I've made changes to emulate your settings and will see what happens after giving the DNS mods a chance to propogate.

Is this still a valid procedure?
I have two custom domains. "jerrybarton.eu" is my primary domain - working well now for over a year.
I just added "jerrybarton.at" [via register.eu service] and forwarded www.jerrybarton.at (http://www.jerrybarton.at) to www.jerrybarton.eu (http://www.jerrybarton.eu) - but I end up at the smugmug main page when entering the ...at domain.

Another thread here said to implement this forwarding, but obviously I'm doing something wrong. I haven't put any A records or made any changes to my primary custom domain.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

If the first domain is CNAMEd as required by smug, then forwarding to that domain should work.

I have two domains:
www.denisegoldberg.com (http://www.denisegoldberg.com) is CNAMEd, points to my smugmug site.
www.denisegoldbergphotography.com (http://www.denisegoldbergphotography.com) is forwarded to www.denisegoldberg.com (http://www.denisegoldberg.com).

Both domains go to my smug site.

My primary custom domain www.jerrybarton.eu is CNAMEd to domains.smugmug.com. It had an "A" record of "*" to the IP address 208.79.45.23. I have now deleted this A record since I don't believe it is necessary.
[It also has MX records to my mail provider, but that shouldn't play a role here]

My secondary custom domain www.jerrybarton.at has "URL forwarding" to http://www.jerrybarton.eu [I assume this is the CNAME but the registrar [www.registrer.eu] doesn't show technical terms but replaces them with text descriptions] [No A Name record - MX records to my mail provider]

But entering www.jerrybarton.at lands me at www.smugmug.com

Any further suggestions?

Jerry,

Removing the A record is not a good idea. It was in place so that visitors could get to your site without entering the www. That doesn't work anymore.

You have no forwarding set on your www.jerrybarton.at. You added a CNAME pointing to www.jerrybarton.eu. That doesn't work. Instead, reset the domain settings on your .at domain to default and do a web redirect / forwarding (no frame forwarding).
For more suggestions, go to our multiple domains (http://wiki.smugmug.net/display/SmugMug/Multiple+Domains) wiki page.

Thanks, Sebastian.

I have now written to register.eu to find out how to do this (since they hide technical details). Should have done it all with GoDaddy in the first place.

[and I've seen the Wiki page too - actually looked there first <smile> but couldn't cope]

I don't know precisely what the people at register.eu did, but I was just informed that they did it - and now the forwarding works.

Thanks for the help, Heros!

I am running into the same issue with my new domain being redirected to the main smugmug page instead of my actual smugmug page. I followed the instructions supplied on the wiki domain help page for godaddy users. How long should I expect for a change like this to take effect? Perhaps I am just not being patient enough? It's been a few hours.

Thanks!

-Davedid you put your domain in the domain field, control panel? If not, do that :) If you still have issues, please write our Support Heroes (http://smugmug.com/help/emailreal) and let us help you directly from the help desk. Thanks!

Thanks Andy,

I read through this thread again and Chuck's fix on the first page did the trick. Both domains are now up and running and pointing where they should!
