50 1.4 is niiiiiiccce!!!!!!

Well I went to the PO today to pick up the 50 1.4 I traded the Tamron for. I couldn't wait to get home, so I opened the box and shot a couple of flowers at the PO. I'm happy I decided to go primes.

I rented the 85mm f/1.2L last weekend for a Rally shoot and OMG what a lens.... I think it weighs as much as the 100-400L, but worth every ounce... on second thought... my back still kinda hurts from lugging it around... :D

I heard it's a beast. Have you shot the 85 1.8 also? I'm curious because you can buy almost 4 of those for what it costs for a 1.2. That's the same in the case of the 50, but the costs are a tad lower.:D

Nah when I rent lenses, I tend to go big and get any L i can get :D

A local shop offers half price on one day rentals on Friday's after 3pm. Since they are closed on Saturday and Sunday, you essentailly get a REALLY nice lens for the weekend for around 10-15 bucks.

The only drawback is that you get what is left. I hardly am every able to get the lense I want to rent (70-200mm L) but the 100-400 seems to always be there... they have a great selection of lighting etc too.... everything is half off after 3.

It just makes more sense to me to rent for now... since I could rent a 100-400 about 200 times before i get to its retail value.

I have the 50 f/1.4 as well and I just ordered a reversal ring for my Macro lens. 100mm f/2.8 and a reversed 50 f/1.4... should be fun :)

I am extremely interested in buying Nikon's newer 50 mm f/1.8 D lens, which retails for about 170 Canadian. Has anyone used this lens, or own it? My camera came with the usual kit lense, a 28-80...which I find rather slow, often wishing it was sharper too. Would f/1.8 satisfy alot of dim/available light shooting? I d be using it for travel alot too...

I'm also concerned that being made in China, out of mostly plastic..will this lens hold up for a while? I don't want to replace it again soon. THANKS!

As you mention, it's made in China and there is a lot of plastic in the construction. I think it's tough enough though and the quality of the results is good.

Since getting the 50 1.8 I also aquired the 85mm f1.8. This is the one I use the most, my favorite lens for portraits. Quite a bit more expensive, but better build and made in Japan.

Both lenses offer great value and work really well.
