and their partners. Who does what in this relationship? With the wind as strong as it was, alot of my photos of the pelicans were not in focus. Then I saw this strange thing going on.. Glad I got a photo of it.

This photo is soft, I know it is soft. Just want you all to know that. Best I could do. I wanted to ask about this situation. The pelican is fishing? The little bird is helping by looking? Or is he the guide? What is the other pelican doing? Is this a frequent happening? ginger

Hey Ginger,

I saw the sam ething a couple of years ago. The gulls will land on the pelicans head and try to steal some of their catch. The pelicans are not real fond of this practice. Good captures.

I had to take a second look to notice that it was actually standing on that pelicans head! >insert belief system here< certainly has a sense of humor. :thumb

Thanks, Harry, for the info and for stopping by.........everyone. There is a name for this kind of relationship in the wild: probably is in the suburbs and cities, too, but haven't heard of that one.

I think these birds are fascinating. Their social system and the rest of it might not be comparable to humans, but they sure have one. I always thought they were just birds.

One of the words is symbiosis, but that is mutually beneficial. I know about the word usage of leech as to slang. But there is a scientific word for this. If I could I would call my daughter on the phone and ask her.

Sittin' on the pelican's head????? :scratch

I've seen the gulls in the water hovering around the pelican, but never actually standing on one's head! :D
