View Full Version : Optimizing Website

Hi all
I am trying to do some things to optimize my website and have it come up in searches such as Goggle. I've been reading some info and am trying to do a couple of things. One thing that seems to be important is to have keywords on your homepage. I tried to do this in HTML, copying the code from this source.
<HEAD>
<TILE>ChrisMcWilliamsPhotography</TITLE>
****** name="description"content="Children Portrait Family Infant Wedding Photography.">
****** name="keywords" content="winnipeg wedding photographer,winnipeg child photographer, winnipeg children's photographer,winnipeg photographer,winnipeg wedding photographer, winnipeg portrait photographer,winnipeg engagement photographer,winnipeg couples photographer,winnipeg infant photographer,winnipeg baby photographer">
</HEAD>
The title is showing up on my homepage but not the keywords. Are they there but hiding or are they missing. Did I made a mistake? What can I do to have these keywords show up on my homepage, at the bottom of the page? Do I have to make up a new footer with them in it?
Please advise. Also, any other suggestions that anyone has to optimize my site would be very welcome.
Thank you
Christina

Hi,
Are these meta tags? If so, that belongs in the head tag section of your customization. I didn't see them anywhere on your site now, so maybe you removed them?
Place them in the head tag section ... do not use the <head> tags.

I moved them to my head tag section. Again the title is showing but not the words. Are they hidden or not there?
I had the tags in the footer section before.

Keywords in your meta tags don't display on your page. They are there for programs that read your page (like search engines) to have more of an idea what your page is about.

I've been working on having a better Goggle ranking. I'm on page 8 right now, so am making progress. My question is this. This is what comes up with my name:
Winnipeg Wedding and Portrait Photographer-Christina McWilliams ... (http://www.chrismcwilliamsphotography.com/)
var oParams = new Object; oParams.AlbumID = "2433290"; oParams.newWindow = ' false'; oParams.transparent = "true"; oParams.splash ...
Obviously, it's the code from the control panel. My question is how do I change this. I haven't a clue.
Thank you

You can't but if you add a text div first in your bio it will show if enough lines. See this page (http://wiki.smugmug.net/display/SmugMug/Flash+Slideshow) and scroll down to:

Does anyone else think it's a problem that Javascript code is ending up in your metadata? I understand why it happens, but the fact that all sorts of junk is ending up in your metadata is bad. Shouldn't Smugmug fix it? They could if they wanted.
I don't know Google's algorithm, but I assume that putting a lot of junk in the metadata with the real stuff has got to dilute the important of the good stuff.
The whole "Bio text in the metadata" is a giant hack. Why not allow that to be the default for people who don't know better (and don't allow javascript text to go there), but give us an actual metadata field so we can put what we want there like we would for any real web page we created?

I did that and now my slideshow isn't working. I'm thinking the problem is at the end of the code with 2 htmls. Is that it?

You've got nested script tags around your Bio slideshow code
<script>
<center>
<script>
various slideshow code
</script>
</center>
</script>
Get rid of the outer set of <script> </script> tags and then we'll see if there is another level of errors to fix.

Obviously, it's still not right. Are you sure that you have one and only one <html> tag and it's at the very beginning of your bio text? I'm seeing an <html> in your actual page which means either that you have more than one in the bio text or you don't have it at the very beginning.
If this still doesn't work, then we need to see your exact bio text. Because dgrin filters out things like <script> tags, it isn't working for you to paste that text directly into a posting here because dgrin is mucking with it.
Your options would be to take a screen shot of the text in your bio box and post a link to that screen shot here or copy the text to the clipboard, save it to a file with a .txt extension and then attach it as a text file to the dgrin posting (use the Manage Attachments button in the compose window).
Also Christina, are you aware that your header is way, way stretched out and goes beyond the right side of the screen?
Allen, I didn't mean to take over here. I just saw something and thought I'd try to help out, but if you have better ideas (which you usually do), feel free to take over.

Your banner looks OK in IE and stretched out in Firefox and Safari. Perhaps Allen can help you with that (I don't know much about CSS layout stuff).
Perhaps what would work best at the moment is to email the help desk (help @ smugmug.com) and they can look at the stuff in your Bio box directly and fix it up for you. Usually it's Barb who helps out with this kind of stuff, but many folks there can help you with this.
FYI, I'm also getting a password prompt on your slideshow. Is there any chance you've linked to a gallery that is password protected?

What's not working? Navbar Looks good in Firefox. IE6 needs to be tweaked
some, menu wraps to two lines, slight gap between drop and main and button
widths need adjustment. Anything else you see not working?
Is it your slideshow is asking for password?

My slideshow is not working. It was working and then I saw those strange items in my goggle search and tried the code you had in the forum instead. I had gotten support to fix it this afternoon and there were a few differences in their code and your code. So I tried your code, but then the slideshow stopped working. Now it is asking for a password yes.

Add the red.

z-index: 99;
padding: 0px 0px 30px 0px; /* spacing around menu - top right bottom left */

Hi, me again. I showed this page from a google search yesterday but it went all strange colours so I am adding it as an attachment. This is a page from this forum that I wrote yesterday. Kind of odd, don't you think. My queston is, "does anyone know why this would have happened? and "does anyone know how to get rid of it?" Or should we just leave it?
I had searched, "winnipeg photographer."

Thanks
CM
I saw that have and not idea if it's a question or even what your talking about.:D

Sorry that was confusing. I'm back and just have a simple question.
If I hide the keywords on my pages, are they of any value as far as search engines finding them? Does this make sense? I just want to know if I need them to show in order for search engines to find them. I don't like how cluttered they make things look.

Keywords are still visible to search engines even if you hide them with CSS.

I'm not sure that I understand. I added keywords to some of my galleries and they show under the picture. I don't like that. So you're saying that I can hide those keywords with CSS.
Do I do that in the control panel? How do I do that? I can't find that info.
thanks

This in your CSS will hide the keywords in the galleries.
#photoKeywords {display: none;}
.loggedIn #photoKeywords {display: block;}

I put the code in my CSS but it isn't hiding them. Does it matter where I put it? I put it in front of everything.

It won't work for any gallery set to "Smugmug" for appearance because that disables your CSS. Make sure "custom" is checked under customize gallery.

Just wanted to let you know that the tips on how to optimize your website worked!! Thank you to all who helped me through this process that was very difficult for me. I could never have done it alone. Now, when I goggle winnipeg infant photographers, I come up on the first page. The other categories are on pages a bit further back, but I am coming up, and before I was not. Also, I am getting a lot of business because it is all working. I think this is the best place to have your site, and I tell anyone who asks the same thing. :bow
Happy in Winnipeg:ivar
