Is Canon Pakistan playing with me?

As you may know i was going to get my dream lens which i still want. :thumb
About 20 days ago i asked canon they quoted me 46000 Rs. To make sure that they deliver in time i told them i urgently need that lens in 1st week of August and they told me don't worry it will be here at end of July.
to make long story short here is what is happening.

Today they told me if you want the lens today we will arrange from some other place and you have to pay 52000 Rs otherwise you have to wait next 15 or 20 days. :scratch

I am confused about "some other place" as they are the only sole distributors in Pakistan as they claim. If that some other place is working under them then how that price difference is possible ?

Here is channel of distribution

Canon Japan > Canon Singapore > Canon Pakistan > End users or retailers

as you can see canon is directly dealing with consumers.

The guy in contact with me is Canon's regional manager in our city.I am totally lost i think they are exploiting need of poor photographer who want it urgently to shoot on independence day celebration :scratch.

talking about 17-40L :cry. When i have money no body want to sell to me when i don't have money everyone wants to sell it to me. It seems like they don't like to sale products :scratch or they are on my father's side :rofl

Anyone has contact info of canon HQ ? some direct contact email who can look into this issue ?

No they told me lens is booked from Singapore along with other canon consignment, on 28th July i was told the shipment is in transit. Yesterday i called them and guy told me he will tell me tomorrow. And today he told me that crap.

How is it being shipped to you? I know UPS, FedEX and DHL are international, but I am not sure what shipping companies are in your area. Did they give you a tracking number that you can check online?

Or is it all by phone? Either way it is a crappy situation you are in.

Na nothing no UPS Fedex, if they bring i will pick it from their office and pay them the money.
Sickest thing is that i love that lens and have money for that but they are acting like crooks :dunno. I am sure they know i need it urgent so they are trying their luck, may be not canon but manager ! :dunno

Tell them you will have to find another source if they can't get it by the time they said and for the original cost.

Don't let them think they are in control. They want your money more than you want the lens (I believe.)

Can you get Amazon.com there. I order all my Canon equipment from them. They are extremely reliable and honest, and their prices are FAIR.

Then i have to pay shipping + duties again it will fall in hands like canon Pakistan:huh
Some people buy from Amazon and B&H but had bad experience clearing duties etc.

I guess your best bet is to wait, but do not give any money without the merchandise in your hands. In the meantime, you take such wonderful photographs with what you have. :D :D

While searching i found our distributor is registered at canon Singapore i sent an email. Got phone call from guy who assured he will investigate this issue and will make it sure that i get the lens in 1 week. :D

I'd keep holding it to the guy about this issue, whether or not you have given any form or payment or not. It is becoming more of a hassle for you to get the lens than it should be!

I called them today and he told me of 15 or 16th August. I am totally annoyed have to shoot with kit lens (no problem) but this is not a way !
I am already worried about shutter life of my xti around 7000 clicks. What do you say should i drop 17-40L and get camera body ?

Sorry to hear it didn't arrive. I wouldn't change plans if I were you. The 17-40 is far superior to the kit lens and will serve you well. I don't know what the expected click life of an XTi is, but I suspect that you have 10s of thousands left, and when it ultimately bites the dust there will be better options available than there are today. Stay the course.

Get the lens, even if they are giving you dates they cannot meet.

Your xti should happily click away to somewhere near 30000-50000 shots.

I think the XT is rated for about 50,000 shutter actuation with the xxD series at 100,000K now IIRC.

What! today is around 50th day of celebrating arrival of my dream lens. And few days back i was told lens has reached Pakistan and will be shipped to my city but till now they are saying "Tomorrow"

Today i told canon if you can deliver the lens by 12 pm tomorrow then i am going to buy this lens otherwise i am not going to buy the lens.

That stinks... sounds to me like a sort of scam, since you told them you needed it bad, they are trying to make you pay more out of deperation. Too bad finding honest people is getting harder and harder these days.

Yes i agree hard to find honest people these days. But i am double annoyed due to the fact i am dealing with canon Pakistan directly no store involved in it all stores order them for canon gear. And they are listed on canon website as authorized distributors for Pakistan. So i have no other option :cry

Well the main reason i was after the lens is that ICI was interested to send me on assignment to shoot some beautiful places of Pakistan don't know if i will be going or not ball is in their court. But quality of L glass should be very helpful.:rolleyes

Well, look at it this way. If you get the lens online, you don't have face those guys with warranty issues either. You can even get the direct import version of the lens from, say, adorama or B&H :D

Yes in future i will be sticking to BH and adorama. But now they are not affordable. Let me get job or some photo assignment :D ofcourse i will by evrything i need before i get married :wink
