I've seen the past posts on how to setup a virtual gallery based on a keywork, but it looks like that feature no longer exists..

I want to create a dynamic "virtual" gallery based on keyword...

Is there a way to do this still?

What does the keyword entry in the gallery customize screen do? It would be nice if I added my keywords here, and the gallery would populate based on this search criteria...

I hope this is the right place for this. How about the ability to order proof books via smugmug. This would be a great feature IMO.

Also what kind of mess would it cause to be able to have people pay for the sitting fee via my smugmug site? I know I could price a 4x6 titled sitting fee and have them do that but that seems a little out of line and working the system.

And last but not least, is it possible or would it be possible to set print package options in galleries.

Wow three requests and my first post. Don't burn me too bad!!:D

Hi,

I was hoping that it would be possible to get some overseas print labs involved. It looks as though this is already on the to-do list, so just wanted to add my vote ... especially one for Australia :)

Not sure how this would work, but to outsource that kind of work, would SM contact print labs they've dealt with; wait for a print lab to offer their services; perhaps act on a recommendation from someone who has had good service from a particular print lab?

I'm happy to test out various print labs to provide one opinion on quality and service.

Thanks,
Scott

Keywords are still in use so the "virtual" gallery work-around that you read about should still work. I'm not sure what that was, but we haven't changed the functionality of keywords so everything should behave the same. We don't have Virtual Galleries yet. It's a popular request and we won't forget about it.

The keywords in the Customize Gallery page is for the gallery. Just as keywords on photos will bring up the photos in a search, the keywords that you enter there for the gallery will bring up the gallery when you search for that keyword. So sorry, but it has nothing to do with a virtual gallery.

No burning here :) glad you replied.

Sorry, no proof books. There are books that you can get from Blurb.
http://www.blurb.com/partner/smugmug
But probably not what you are looking for.

I don't know what kind of mess that would create to collect the sitting fee. I'll share with the rest of the crew.

No print package options yet. However, we recently released our new shopping cart. That is going to open the door to many wonderful options that Photographers have been begging for.

We appreciate the suggestion.

I have another feature to suggest/request in the theme of working with geotagged images

I would love to see a viewing style - similar to journal that displayed mapping in place of the description.

here is a example I stitched together. ideally would be more zoomed out and not sure if I would like other pinpoints to show too (other nearby images)

Two of the most common photo items purchased are calendars, and greeting cards. It would be very nice if smugmug could allow customers (and "owners") to create calendars and folding greeting cards from members' photos. Perhaps that could be a partnered arrangement (as with blurb for books).

Ideally I would like to see several sizes of calendar with customizable starting month and layout. Ideally cards should allow custom message and back printing.

Currently I have to resort to winkflash or other sites for these products... and their products are pretty good.

It would be so nice to have the excellent smugmug interface include these options! :soapbox

Thanks!

Any idea on when virtual galleries will appear? this year? next?

Maybe there is different way to acomplish what im trying to do: I want a gallery with all my photos for the month, and another gallery with specific photos that match keywords or some other criteria (like date range or location)...

It looks like the only way to do this is upload duplicate photos (which is a real pain)

Thanks for the info!

I know there are RSS feeds already implemented, but for some more casual users that don't use RSS feeds, being able to subscribe using their e-mail address for (daily, weekly, monthly) updated to a gallery or "most popular" photos (just like the current frontpage RSS feeds) would be great.

I am not a casual user by any means (addicted?) and I still prefer simply visiting all my individual sites vs. RSS feeds. What can I say? I'm old fashioned :D

This may have been suggested before (hopefully not already implemented, if so, sorry!) but I just wanted to toss this out there before lunch :thumb

I said "yet" because we might make this available in the future. But that is not to say that we Will. The possibility is there. But no, there isn't a time frame on this.

No way to do what you have described. The closest you can come is by using out timeline feature and keywords. But then that doesn't get you what you want. Sorry.

Yes, and please don't forget to include some sort of visual indicator for logged in owner on or around or near the thumbnail (regardless of style, and including keyword search results pages) to indicate that the image is hidden to visitors...small border of 'x's around the image, or a watermark across the image...something, anything, to highlight the fact that the image is hidden when logged out. Thanks in advance.

In the "Move to other galleries" you cannot get info on a picture by clicking on the little "i" icon in the bottom right corner of the thumb like you can in the "Move to other gallery".

Hi,

I'd like to see "named resources", so that URLs into my smugmug domain could be friendly. I have seen the javascript tricks, but they aren't really suitable - I'd like something "real", in the sense that it works on the URL and virtual filesystem level, even when javascript is not available.

The "keyword" approach is about 23% of what I'm looking for... a-la:
httq://images.vanity.com/keyword/carefully-chosen-keyword-applied-to-all-images-in-only-one-gallery

Use case:

Our organization hosts events, and after the events we put up posts on our site to show the rest of the world that something happened, with a couple of thumbnails in the article. The intention is to hotlink the thumbnail to the corresponding item at our SmugMug site.

[The following example assumes that httq://www.vanity.com is the site with our CMS/blogging system, and images.vanity.com is the site glued to vanity.smugmug.com via a CNAME record, and properly configured as such within the SM control panel.]

For example, the article at:
httq://www.vanity.com/events/October-Bash-08

would contain text, and a thumbnail:
httq://www.vanity.com/thumbs/October-Bash-08/MarySings-th.jpg

and this thumbnail would be linked to
httq://images.vanity.com/galleries/October-Bash-08/MarySings

This would be instead of httq://images.vanity.com/galleries/895410_H5CHX#66364851_3Yyer or something, which, in the minds of my contributors, translates roughly into this:

httq://images.vanity.com/galleries/@%&%@_Kr4zy_stuff_to_confuse_my_editors_0x#$%@^_g0od_luck_when_someone_moves_a_resource_HAHA!!

If this functionality were available, it would allow a user to create a story on one site, "MyLatestStory", and also create a gallery at SmugMug of the same name, "MyLatestStory", and be able to crosslink between resources without confusion. The easier it is for users to post stories including links to SmugMug, the more links to SmugMug will exist, and more traffic for SmugMug will be the result.

I can imagine tricks using .htaccess files, or virtual directory settings, or something in Apache to make this work, or the equivalent in whatever tech you are using, but I have no idea if that would be practical or not, based on implementation complexity, added resource usage, etc.

--

An elaboration on the scheme could be something like:
httq://www.vanity.com/thumbs/October-Bash-08/MarySings-th.jpg?cool-display-option=YES&enable-sales-button=NO

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's thoughts on my suggestion. Hopefully it hasn't been posted before, I skimmed through all of the other feature requests and I didn't see anything similiar, other than the repeated pleas for Virtual Galleries. But this is really something different.

thanks-
B&T

P.S. I used "httq" to suppress the auto-hotlinking behavior of this board.

I like the idea, then I would be able to tell people where they can find the pictures from a certain event at once instead of having to ask them to send me an email so I can look up the correct URL

Exactly - it's the difference between this conversation:[Jane Doe, upon seeing me take pictures at the event:]
Hi, can I get a copy of these pictures you are taking? My mom wants to see what we've been doing. I told her I was doing Save the Trail day again this year, and she wants to see pictures.

[Me, eager to expand the traffic to our site, and spread the word about our work:]
Sure, it's easy. Just go to images.bike-n-trail.com, and search for "Save the Trail".

[Jane Doe:]
Um, well, she types all her searches directly into the address bar half the time. The other half, she types her search terms into the yahoo toolbar that keeps getting installed in her browser. That'll never work. Don't you have a folder or something?

[Me:]
Sure, we've got folders on the site. Today's photos will be in the Events category, under the 2008 subcategory. So, have her go to the homepage, click on the Events category, and then the 2008 subcategory. This gallery will be called Save the Trail.

[Jane Doe:] You don't understand. My mom ... My mom is, shall we say, NOT GOOD WITH COMPUTER.

Don't you have a direct link, like images.bike-n-trail.com/save-the-trail/janes-crew?

[Me:] Sure, I can just tag the pictures with the keyword savethetrail, and you can have your mom use the keyword facility. The keyword facility uses a dash character as a delimiter, so sometimes it's simpler to use "all one word" tags. So, tell her to type in images.bike-n-trail.com/keyword/savethetrail , and then click on janescrew on the line starting with "combine with". Alternatively, just have her type in images.bike-n-trail.com/keyword/savethetrail-janescrew.

[Jane Doe:] Never mind.

and this one:[Jane Doe, upon seeing me take pictures at the event:]
Hi, can I get a copy of these pictures you are taking? My mom wants to see what we've been doing. I told her I was doing Save the Trail day again this year, and she wants to see pictures.

[Me:]
Sure, just go to images.bike-n-trail.com/save-the-trail/janes-crew . You can tell her over the phone, none of the keystrokes are ambiguous, nor do any require the shift key. Your mom should find it easy; I was thinking of my mom when I set this system up.

[Jane Doe:] Great! Thanks!

So I guess what I'm asking for, in terms of the way the system already works, is the following:

The ability to access the keyword system directly off the root, without appending /keyword/ within the URL
The ability to use some other type of delimiter between keywords, i.e.: images.vanity.com/tag01,tag-with-hyphen,tag08 in a way that is

easy to communicate verbally
simple to type without the shift key or taking the fingers off of the home row
An option that will automatically tag galleries and photos with the names of the category, subcategory, and gallery name, so that images will automatically be available via a direct, friendly URL which mirrors the organization of the site.
Ice cream for breakfast.

OK, so I just noticed that your keyword system allows space characters. Which is... really cool.

But spaces are always getting munged or eaten when links get emailed, reposted, etc. Using %20 in the URL will allow the space to survive, but it breaks the "easy to type", "easy to verbalize", and "not confusing to mom" rules.

Most current browsers will automagically convert spaces to %20 when typed in the address bar

Bikes 'n Trails

Most current browsers will automagically convert spaces to %20 when typed in the address bar Yes, correct. But that depends on how you define "most current browsers". If by "current" you mean browsers released recently, then yes. If you mean, "the browser currently being used by my aunt", then maybe — and then again, maybe not.

In any case, certainly one cannot say that all hosted BBS and blogging software will behave as expected when mom clicks on the address bar and copies an URL containing spaces and pastes it in a post, email message, IM, etc. Your really cool URL with spaces, likehttp://vanity.com/keyword/big event (http://vanity.com/keyword/big%20event)

Suddenly becomes:http://vanity.com/keyword/big event

... which is when my phone starts ringing, and my logs get filled with 404's instead of happy customers finding what they want.

So I guess I will add another requirement to the request: URLs using a list of concatenated keywords should be represented in a form which will survive reposting in any environment. (So my suggestion above to use commas would likely have problems, some software might want to be "helpful" and insert a line break after the comma.)

Bendr
Aug-04-2008, 03:23 PM
What if it were just a simple redirector that the site owner could configure, so say, you could configure a url and then select the gallery it takes you to. instead of trying to set up a url parser...

for example, I've got a gallery here at

http://bendr.smugmug.com/gallery/2020656_s5FxR

I want the keyword 'rover' to redirect to that gallery automatically, so I go into my control panel and add the keyword 'rover', setting it to redirect to the gallery I want.

After setting that up, then I just give my customer a url something like

Bendr.smugmug.com/k/rover

Which then will automatically redirect them to the gallery I specify. This way, if I move the gallery, I can just change the redirector, to the new location, and the customer can still find the photos.

Also, I would love to see a Copy to gallery function for the web interface, as it is, I have a gallery that automatically recieves all my photo's from an Eye-Fi, then I move them to other galleries as needed. However, I have been leaving the photo's in the original location as an archive of photo's, so as it is, I have to make a copy of every photo I want to move, and then move them. It would be much easier if all I had to do was one step that copied the photo's to the other gallery...

Thanks,
Ben

Three feature requests:

I have a bunch of HDR's that I've uploaded as final products. I've got the JPG that is displayed, the TIFF that was outputted from PhotoMatix (or whatever HDR program you use), but then I've got the 2,3,5,(x) number of photos used to make the HDR that I cannot upload. It would be awesome if there was a way to specify that the following <x> number of pictures were what was used to make the one image. I would love to have my final HDR image and when I click "Save Image" I would be able to see or download the original images that made the HDR. I don't want to upload these as individual gallery pictures -- I just want them associated with the HDR in my SmugVault. Possible in the future?
There may be some way to do this already but I would like to have some more control over where the tooltip pops up when you put your mouse over the image. As it stands now, as soon as you put the mouse over the image the little tool tip pops up asking me for thumbs up/down, photo sizes, photo info, save photo, etc. It ends up covering up my image the second the mouse goes over anywhere on the picture. It'd be great if we could do the following
Specify where (how) the tool tip popped out from (top, left, bottom, or right)
Specify in what direction it should pop out: if I select the right side, it can pop out to the left (covers the image) or to the right (doesn't cover the image), etc.
Have the galleries named logically. The random string is hard to paste to someone and doesn't make quite sense to someone looking at it. If my gallery was http://<blah>.smugmug.com/GreeceTrip it's a lot nicer to send than http://<blah>.smugmug/com/seior39487askjfhako2_sdkjfh34.
Thanks again and keep up the awesome work!

Under Control Panel -> Homepage, it was really easy to add a section for "Most Popular Photos" to my homepage. I was wondering why there isn't a similar one for "Most Recent Photos"? This is similar to subscribing to an RSS feed, but for people visiting the actual link (which I keep on my GChat status message), it would be a quick way for them to notice any newly added photos.

Thanks for reading! :thumb

I tried customizing my gallery to sort in descending order by "date uploaded", which it did beautifully. But if I go into "Arrange Mode" and try to custom place one or two photos, the "Saving..." window shows up but if I reload, the order seems fixed to the 'date uploaded' order without preserving the few I wanted to custom place.

Is there a way to do what I'm trying to do? Before, I would upload photos, which would appear at the end of my gallery, and I'd move them accordingly. I basically want to have photos uploaded to the front instead of the end of the gallery, but not necessarily strictly sorted by 'date uploaded'.

Thanks in advance :)

Could you guys add a check box that says "Copy instead of moving" to the two move to gallery tools or make a new tool for it?

Here are things that have continually bugged me:

1) Mentioned before, named resources. We already have named categories (ie http://photos.rpsommers.com/Astronomy), why not let us choose the gallery URL if we're not worried about people guessing it.

2) Better geotagging support, specifically mass-tagging. I'm not fortunate enough to own anything fancy to geotag when I capture or link the two in post. And it's a big pain to tag dozens of photos by searching for the location for each individual one. It would even be helpful just to mass-tag an entire gallery to a single location and then refine each photo later.

3) Keyword tracking... I'm a statistics hound, I'd love to see which keywords returned my photos in searches, at the least. Optimally I'd love to see which keywords lead people to clicking on a photo of mine.

4) Better support for gallery settings and price templates. I liked the addition of gallery settings templates, but I've yet to find a way to updates or remove one of them... I'd love to see the same thing for pricing.

If further explanation for any of those is needed, please let me know!

Thanks again for a great product!

This is both a question and a suggestion:
For the homepage section for "Most Popular Photos", I'm not entirely sure if it's ranked by photo views (which I know is tracked in the stats page already) or by viewer ranking by thumbs up. It would be a subtle but helpful addition to be able to let viewers (or the owner) choose which method to rank popular photos.

I know that I personally scroll through almost every photo in a gallery I visit, but I also know that the ones I like are the ones I'll be direct-linking to friends to view, so sort-by-photo-hits should still allow popular photos to stand out in terms of stats.

I just want to throw my support in for adding print packages. Custom packages we create ourselves would be awesome. I know other labs use things like "Pick a Pak" and other ways that allow you create your own packages to sell at set prices.

Memory Mates for sports and schools would be a very nice addition.

My top 10 wishlist:

1) clear 'buffering indication' for videos
Currently, users are presented with a black screen without much indication of what's happening.

2) a recent update overview (homepage widget) and a 'what's new?' indication for galleries
Users of my website find it hard to see my recent updates, especially when galleries are 'hidden' inside categories.

3) inline video playback
It would be great if videos could play inline (eg. in Smugmug view) instead of opening in a new window.

4) ability to set the default quality/resolution for video playback.
Currently SM defaults to the highest quality but unfortunately the HD videos take a very long time to start playing and this causes many viewers to abandon it. Would be great if I could set the default to eg. iPod/DVD format.

5) a more polished look and feel
There have been already some improvements in this regard but a more polished look for Smugmug would be appreciated. I've seen some awesome Silverlight and Flash photo & video gallery demo's on the web that would be awesome to be included in Smugmug.

eg. http://videoshow.vertigo.com/Tags.aspx
and http://www.vertigo.com/SlideShow.aspx

6) pre-caching of images
Some competitors of SM offer a faster/snappier photo viewing experience especialy when clicking 'next' to view the next picture. Eg. Zenfolio and Phanfare display the photo almost instantly while Smugmug has a slight loading delay.

7) Speed improvements!
As discussed in a seperate thread, Smugmug could use an overal speed increase. Most notably: slow loading of thumbnails and very slow loading of galleries (since SM has to pick a random thumbnail per gallery).

8) Preserve the layout when I am logged in
When I am logged in, Smugmug ruins my layout by inserting logged in features such as 'add photos' and 'control panel'. It would be great if these features where placed at the bottom of the page. On a sidenote, it would also be great if there was an option to take you to the control panel directly after logging in. Currently I have to click 2 or 3 times to enter the control panel (login -> view my homepage -> control panel).

9) A better Search!!!
I know this is mentioned already but this really need to be improved. I cannot find half of my uploaded galleries through Smugmug search.

10) Easier customization options
Would be nice if Smugmug offered easier customization options. There are many features that many users currently try to implement through hacks and custom code (eg. second homepage for photos, recent update listing etc.). It would be great if Smugmug added an advanced tab in the control for tweaking the look and feel.

2 things I would like to see in SmugMug:

The ability to provide a guest with a URL they can use to upload their pics to my gallery with my permission. When combining pics from group activities they have to email them to me for uploading.
A shopping cart system for free downloading of full sized originals. Currently my guests much downaoad each picture one by one instead of selecting a list of pictures or an entire album. If they could specify which ones they wanted and then download a zip file, it would be much more efficient. This is intended for sharing with friends & family as opposed to the current option of selling pictures.

Possible in the future?</x>
If my gallery was http://<blah>.smugmug.com/GreeceTrip it's a lot nicer to send than http://<blah>.smugmug/com/seior39487askjfhako2_sdkjfh34.</blah></blah>Thanks again and keep up the awesome work!

Yeah, what we call Entangling (multiple file types associated by the same filename) wouldn't work with multiple photos with the same file types but different filenames that you use. I don't know if it will be made possible in the future or not, but it's on our Feature Request list now.

Check this thread out for your photobar issues:

The Custom URL request is noted. Thanks.

I'm gonna hit your three requests here. Thanks for the request about the most recent feature. The Most Popular photo section contains photos that are ranked with the thumbs or with comments. It isn't related to photo views.

You can't use the Auto Sort feature and then arrange the photos while using that. It will force the photos you are trying to move back to where the Auto Sort put them. There has been some discussion recently about doing what you are trying to do and I'll talk to the Sorcerers about it.

When you use the send email command it puts in the photo that you are currently on when you click the share link. I would like to be able to send the link to the gallery so when they click on it they go to the first image not the image that i happen to be on when i click share. So you should be able to choose the photo that shows up in the email.

[1] A bulk 'hide photo' option... Really useful when you only want to publicly display the obviously good pictures in a shoot and hide the rest (for archival / later review / retrieval)...

[2] A more obvious indication that photos have been hidden (I'm sure this has been mentioned before)... How about a 30% transparency of the thumbnail(s) in question... It's maybe just a stylesheet thing which can be handled differently by the stylesheet designers... But something more obvious like a 30% transparency (with 100% on mouseover) would be fairly innocuous across styles...

[3] Larger thumbnails when adding captions and keywords... Or the option to view a larger image on request (mouseover after a 1 second pause for example) like in the shopping cart... I find myself having to squint at the thumbnail all too often when I'm trying to make out who is in the photo!

[4] Keyword / cloud consistancy... I have a few photos tagged with "tim", "myu" and "best"... When looking through a keyword search on "myu", it allows me to combine with "tim" or "best"... If I combine with "best" I no longer have the option of combining with "tim"... However, if I chose to combine with "tim" first, I can now combine with "best"... What gives?

[5] Keyword / cloud filtering by category and subcategory... This would be very usefull: I wrote some more about that here: http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=102026

[6] A bulk copy to feature... It's been mentioned before many times... I know you're probably not too keen on making it too easy for people to duplicate files on your servers, but I think people want to be able to make galleries of highlighted photos etc... If some sort of linking isn't an option (which it isn't right now), the solution is to make a 2nd copy and move it... Or reupload the image... Help us out please!

Add a selection to the photo tools for "2nd copy and move".

This would act on the single photo and would save all the steps of moving
after making the copy. The way it's set up now is you don't easily know
which is the original or copy.

8) Preserve the layout when I am logged in
When I am logged in, Smugmug ruins my layout by inserting logged in features such as 'add photos' and 'control panel'. It would be great if these features where placed at the bottom of the page.
You can move these buttons to the side if you'd like. I can't remember which wizard here supplied the code, but I've used this on my site for a long, long time.

Add this to your CSS:

/* Float the homepageTools */
#homepageTools {
position:fixed;
top:15px;
left:15px;
width:120px;
}
#homepageTools .buttons {
width: 100px;
margin: 1px 0;
}

The buttons are placed on top of my banner at the top left corner of the screen. But they don't alter the placement of anything on the screen.

I have a few requests. Most I see are suggested already, but I'd just like to add my voice/vote for them:

1. Be able to put photos into multiple galleries without uploading the photo separate times (or making copies on the servers). Ranking and comments stay with the photo, I only have to replace the one copy if I want to replace it, but it should appear in whatever galleries I place it in. The "virual galleries" discussed above based on a keyword, or timeframe, or EXIF data would be great as well.

(I hate to say "more like Flickr" but honestly that's a better model - separate out the "photostream" from the organization and presentation)

2. The javascript hacks work well enough, but it would be nice to have a navigation bar supported directly, as well as a separate home page and galleries page supported directly. I *love* that I can do basically anything with the javascript... but even some of the most common customizations seem to take an advanced CS degree to implement.

3. Photo titles - we get the caption and keywords from the EXIF data, but the closest thing we get to a title is the filename?

Aug-09-2008, 04:54 PM
I know it's been requested already, but if there's a "tally" keeping track of the "most requested features" I'd like to add a point to:

- Be able to download an entire galleries images with one click. I suppose it could just be a zip file of all the jpgs/tifs/RAW files?
- Being able to download an entire gallery on SmugVault would be nice too (Is there a way to do this already?)! It's great to backup my pictures, but if my HD crashes, is there an easy way to grab all my RAW files again? One by one clicking can be a pain (although it's better than having none of the RAW images backed up anywhere!).

Thanks. Keep up the great work!

Votes for:

1. Bulk Download of a gallery, ideally automagically import into picasa.
2. Automagic playing of videos in slideshows.

Picasaweb has both features and my audience misses them.

Also, I would like to request support for text based transitions to enhance slide shows.

Currently I use MS paint to create a blank jpeg with text in the center. and maybe a few small pictures. For example, I'm getting ready to post pictures from a trip to Maui for the family on the east coast. I'll be creating blank pictures (to insert into my slideshow) with text on them with the titles:

Maui Trip July 2008
Ferry Boat!
Water Play
Walks on the Beach
Evening Fun

It would be nice if the task could be completed in smugmug, for example through controlling the size of the slideshow caption for specific slides.

While it's already asked for, I'm just casting my vote for it as well....

When emailing from SM, I'd like to either choose the photo that sends the viewer to the gallery - or even better have a few templates to choose from. For example - the standard large first photo - but maybe a few more in a row like the top of dgrin, or a "Polaroid" view/collage view (another stolen idea from picasa- but you get the idea).

just a suggestion for all the users that are overseas but still using smugmug.

i am located in Australia, and honestly I'm not to keen in having people buy the prints from the US and then having to get the shipped. i would much prefer to have an Australia based printer that will allow for us Aussies to get it printed easier and faster.

so in short, is it possible for smugmug to get a printer in Australia? this would help me and im sure alot of other Australians that are currently or thinking about signing up to smugmug.

Are you referring to the thumbnails used to identify the gallery on the homepage? So, just by moving the mouse over them you can see multiple thumbnails from the gallery? I don't see the benefit that that sort of thing inside the gallery. Just want to be clear on this.

Maybe there is a way. But I have linking and things turned off for my gallery. However I'd like an easy way to submit the link for an image to a service such as tineye.com.

Tineye lets you send any picture and it will find where else it is used even with heavy modifications. Right now it's free and I'd like to take advantage of it.

Here is a great one. Allow visitors to create e-cards. Using the same card interface, allow a visitor to make a card from any picture (gallery enabled) then email that card to friends. The email would include the card, along with a link inviting the person to come see the rest of the pictures. This can result in more sales for everyone.

This one has been requested before, but it never seems to make it to the FR lists. Can we get the image number displayed on the actual replace image screen? When I process a proof-delay order, the image name is shown on the order screen, but when I press the Replace button to go to the screen where the file name is REALLY needed, it isn't anywhere to be found. It would be great to have the image name right there on the screen while browsing through my local files. Please add this for the sake of all of your users with short attention spans!

I did just recently notice that the gallery name is printed at the top of the replace screen. That's awesome, because it usually corresponds to a directory name on my local storage.

That is correct. For example, a quick google search for ".mac photo galleries" turns up:

Hover the mouse over the thumbnail for an entire gallery. As the mouse moves, you can see different thumbnails from within that gallery.

Please consider allowing quasi-HTML (like in the BIO section on a user's front page) in the gallery descriptions on the gallery page...

I have a highly tweaked front page (thanks to the quasi-HTML in my BIO) which links only to the categories I want to show people, the rest are for personal use only... I really like this... I wish I could have even more control over this front page! But not enough to upgrade! Heheh!

Anyway, I can see request this maybe conflicting with the short gallery descriptions on the gallery listing pages (when it comes to allowing the use the <img> tag)... But it would be great to be able to use pretty hyperlinking in these descriptions instead of ridiculously long full URLS... For example!

Pretty please?

When this thread is closed, you can be sure that all of the feature requests have been shared with everyone at SmugMug.

As an international Smugmug user, I'm disappointed to see that the request for working UTF-8 support in categories and keywords is missing in the "hot list" - although it seems to have been present in almost every FR thread (and several bug threads).

The current situation is somewhat strange: when a keyword including a non-ascii character is uploaded, this character seems to be preserved (it appears in the "edit keyword" field), but is dropped when the keyword is rendered. This produces very strange words (maybe sometimes even "bad" words) in all the languages that use such characters (for instance, German needs the äöü & such). When the non-ascii is uploaded as an HTML entity, it causes the edit keyword feature to break completely (the string is cut where the entity character used to be).

The reasons for not supporting UTF-8 that were mentioned in the prior posts are varied but non seems very valid. Handling UTF-8 using AJAX is not a problem (in fact, it works at smugmug for captions and such) and URL encoding for any unicode character is defined using UTF-8 (RFC3987).

I do think that this feature would make smugmug much more attractive for an international audience - and should not be difficult to implement (definitely an easy one compared to many of the above).

Leo

Did a search and didn't find this one, but somehow I suspect it's been requested before. Anyways: how about a "batch" edit geography interface? If I want to assign geography to a pile of pictures already in SM it's cumbersome to have to do it for each photo - reloading, re-locating and so on.

I know there are plenty of third party apps to do this before uploading, but I have a bunch of pictures that I'd like to go back through without having to remove and re-upload.

By the way, if you can implement:

Like the "Most Popular Photos" feature, I would also like to see a "New Photos" feature that would show new photos since the visitors last visit.

I watch several smugmug galleries, but it would be nice to be able to click on "New Photos" someplace to see the new pics since last visit...

I know I can use RSS, but I also want a way to allow users to click on "New Photos" to view new stuff...

If they got an email saying

I'm not arguing against having Smugmug offer this, but it would be possible with some Javascript and some HTML to implement this yourself. You'd use the Javascript to cookie the visitor with the date of their visit. On their next visit, you'd read the previous cookie to see when they last visited (and set a new cookie). You could then offer some HTML that would offer them a link to click on that would do a date search from the date of their last visit until now and they'd see all the recent photos.

Agreed. This would only take a "power" account (ability to customize).

And, upon further reflection, the view by date in Smugmug is "date photo taken", not "date photo uploaded" so this probably wouldn't work anyway.

Edit: there's a preference in the control panel to set whether the timeline uses "date photo taken" or "date uploaded". This could work.

Hey JoeG... You could sign up with FeedBurner.com and set up something with them... It's free and works off your SmugMug feed... It'll take you some time and paitience to set it up, but once it's working and customised they way you like, it should work a treat! This is a copy of request that I saw from an earlier post that I would like to see also. It is this:

It would be great if there was an overidel option for users to choose concerning which thumbnail size would display on their category pages. Right now it's different depending on the number of galleries in a category. (I think <5 galleries gives bigger thumbnails.) How about letting a user choose one size that stays consistent across categories regardless of the number of galleries in the category.

I just moved to SmugMug from Sharpcast (they are going to replace their photography tool with a new product called SugarSync in February 09). SmugMug is a better package in almost every way and I love it!

...But...The sharing features, specifically the address book and grouping, in Sharpcast are very nice. I think enhancing the address book and sharing tools in SmugMug would make it more compelling package.

The "hot list" is not a list that we are working on or one that we want to implement soon. Rather it's a list of very commonly requested features. You know the stuff that gets asked repeatedly every time that we open a new feature request thread and stuff that is commonly emailed into the help desk. Don't worry, we keep track of all the requests that come in. Even if they are not real common, if they are good enough, we'll use them. I've made a record of your request.

I found zazzle through smugmug and get a calendar printed that way.

:soapbox

Thanks!

I'd love to see something like Picasa's just released "name tags":
http://picasa.google.com/features-nametags.html

It's long been a dream feature of mine and I'm drooling over it; I'd love if Smugmug implemented it.

In short:
"Name tags helps you automatically find similar faces in your photo collection. All you have to do is enter a name or choose from your contacts."

"Once you've named the people in your photos, you can do things like sort your photo collection by person, create custom slideshows, and easily share photos with the people in your albums."

In micro:
Automatic facial recognition and tagging (once you teach it a few faces).

Hello everybody,

I've been using Smugmug for some months now and I very happy with it .:rofl

Nevertheless, I'd like to propose a new feature.

Indeed, most of my galleries are protected because there are some people that do not want to have their photos freely displayed on the net. But on the same galleries there are many other photos that do not need protection and that I would like to share with everybody.

Instead of protecting the whole gallery, I think it would be interesting to protect selected photos.

For such galleries:
=> there would be a special icon near the gallery thumbnail to inform the user that some photos are protected
=> the gallery thumbnail could display randomly the public photos (indeed you cannot choose the gallery thumbnail for protected galleries)
=> when the user click on the gallery thumbnail, instead of getting the gallery content immediately the user would get an intermediate page where he could choose either to continue without entering the password and thus see only public photos, either to enter the password and thus see all photos including the protected ones

For me it would be the best of both worlds: public and protected galleries.

Thanks! :bread

The code at the top has parameters like this

Could these be a little more consistent?

It would nice to be able to display popular photos based on the number unique visitor views instead of a popular view based on rankings... Maybe a toggle button on the Most Popular Screen...

Also a "times viewed" stat on the info popup window... A report showing the most popular photos would also be great for the owner...

I would like keywords be accessible in <layer id="google-toolbar-hilite-0" style="background-color: Yellow; color: black;">private</layer> galleries. Even if it's only within the same gallery.

I do events frequently involving children. The gallery must be password protected. I see no reason why someone with the password shouldn't be able to click a <layer id="google-toolbar-hilite-2" style="background-color: Cyan; color: black;">keyword</layer> and get all the photos within that gallery that have that <layer id="google-toolbar-hilite-3" style="background-color: Cyan; color: black;">keyword</layer>.

I agree.:thumb

When I log in all my keywords in passworded galleries show in the keyword
list. Obviously they are appended to the public KW list with the log in PW so
why not when entering a password for a gallery that those kW's are also
appended to the list. This would make a lot of families happy.

As a minimum the security settings need to be set BEFORE upload of photos.
Uploading photos to a new passworded or unlisted gallery could take hours
and any web crawler could find them in the mean time. Not very secure.
The new gallery page should have some of the security settings on it.

change this
Customize this gallery to your heart's content, including privacy
settings, after you create it.

Another idea...

Implement a new solution or integrate smugmug photos into http://www.pixel-peeper.com solution.

I use http://www.pixel-peeper.com all the time to try to find my next lens and camera... It would be great to be able to search photo exif data

Got an idea? Give it to us here. All of the SmugMug crew read this thread so feel free to share your ideas. Go ahead, give us the requests.

Summary of FRs implemented from the prior thread:
* automatic resize of too-large and too-many mb files
* holiday cards!
* RSS Feeds for unlisted galleries, for logged in users
* Don't count owner hits in stats
* Give owners easy way to download files (Owner Save)
* Give an easy way to see Visitor View
* Store Raw, DNG and other non-jpg files
* Paypal (alright, it's a lame option, but it's there)
* Give Pros the name & address of buyers
* Improve news to customers
* Outage notifications (http://smugmug.wordpress.com)
* Captions in slideshow
* Detect if flash needed for slideshow
* Square thumbs
* Flash Slideshow
* Lower prices (we did, on 5x7s, 8x10s, 8x12s)
* Speed up the shopping cart

I have a Pro account, and am a newbie here on DGrin.

Is there a feature in the pro account where we can add comments about an image, so that the client cannot read them. I often caption an image with titles like 'vintage filter' 'sepia conversion' etc, so that the client knows what finish I've applied on a photo, and they can request that on another image in the gallery. However, sometimes it takes me several actions and tweaks in CS3 to get the image to it's final look, and I would like to record that in detail and have that linked to the image, so that I can access the info and replicate it in a different image, but I don't want to share my workflow with the client.

Does such a feature exist?

It is possible to do this on the image before it is uploaded, by putting comments in IPTC fields which will be stored as metadata on the image. That IPTC data will only be available on the original size so if you don't share that with clients they will not see it. There isn't any magic way for you to see that info on Smugmug. You could see it either by looking at the metadata in the image on your hard drive or you could download the original from your smugmug gallery (which only you have access to) and look at the metadata.

Alternatively, you could put the data in captions, show captions when you are logged in, but hide them for your viewers. But, then you could use captions for their intended purpose because you'd have them hidden for viewers.

The sharegroup inherits the Hide Owner feature when all galleries in the sharegroup use Hide Owner.

If I understand you correctly this is all possible at the present time. Just password protect the galleries in question. A protected category is probably what you are looking for but you could do the same with a menu that said Private or something similar...then if visitors still choose to go to those galleries they would be met with the login dialog box.

I do this with client galleries.

Hi -- Quick Settings are nice and all, but neither the Picasa Uploader nor the Lightroom plug-in let you pick a Quick Setting when you create a new gallery, so after creation you have to go through the annoyance of Customize Gallery and selecting it there.

Since not all of the upload tools support selecting a Quick Setting (although they should!), it would be swell if you could set one of your Quick Settings to be the default for new galleries. Or maybe it could be an ad hoc thing, a button to "Save these settings as the default for new galleries" (ok, so that wouldn't really fit on a button, whatever.)

Thanks!

This would be a great feature and would save having to ALWAYS go to customize settings after every gallery you create. Then, if you don't like square thumbs, you just save rectangular thumbs as your default quick setting. FYI, I don't think quick settings are available via the API so that's why no uploaders support them.

I take photos of a few local HS sports teams, and usually use the "share" feature to email a photo as notice to prior customers that there are new shots available.

It would simplify my life if I could create a group email list, (ie team x, team y, etc) so that I could send a note to the whole team with fewer clicks. I know I could set this up through my own email account, but the emails from smumug seem to have more impact.

I did see a similar request on the board, (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=66155&highlight=email+groups) but could not see if there were any serious thoughts about implementing it.

I wish you could edit complete themes/templates like you can with blogger.

Speaking of Blogger, I'd like to see options in the "share" URL lists to have them preformatted as HTML or BBCode tags for quicker insertion into blog posts and forum posts. Both should, of course, hotlink the image back to the gallery.

For example, currently this is all that's copied;

Adding this would allow quick posting to another website or to Blogger:
<a href="http://kd5nrh.smugmug.com/gallery/6014353_rVzGz/1/376097361_RLKok"><img src="http://kd5nrh.smugmug.com/photos/376097361_RLKok-S-2.jpg"></a>

I'd post the BBCode equivalent as well, but I'm not sure how to escape it so that it will show properly. Right now, though, if I want to post a photo and link it back to the gallery, it takes a couple of switches back and forth to get both URLs and enter them.

Now, all that would get to be a pretty long list if just added to the "Get a link" page, but maybe an extra option or two could be added in the "Send an email | Get a link" bar to offer "Post to web or forum."

I will ask one more time. Can we PLEASE have a site-wide default for new gallery creation for the thumbs so I can set it to rectangular thumbs. One of the few times when I regularly get pissed at Smugmug is when I forget to set the thumbs to rectangular, upload a whole bunch of photos and then see a display like this with lots of heads cut off. While I'm sure that square thumbs are good for some kinds of photos, they are absolutely horrible for the one thing that I shoot the most of (sports in the portrait orientation when shooting tight).

I'd just like a site-wide default for new galleries so that it goes back to the way it used to be and rectangular thumbs are the default for me in any new gallery I create. Saved settings don't usually work because no non-web uploaders support them and because I don't always have a saved setting with the right settings to use (e.g. passwords, etc...).

Please, please, please.

There are likely other settings that would benefit from a site-wide default too like sharpening, geography, camera info, clean, filenames, sort, hello world, hello smuggers, right-click protection, watermarking, largest size, rank, comments, proof days, backprinting and true color.

Comment from someone looking at a gallery of mine while talking to me on the phone, they made the comment that it's far too much hassle to make comments on lots of pics because you have to not only write sonmething but have to pass the anti-spam security check each time - yet the thumbs gives so little feedback. 'Why don't you have stars on the fly?' they enquired?

What a brill idea, and why not indeed - stars don't really need the same level of security as a comment do they?

I would love that if peeps could just click say one to five stars to give a more meaningful rating to the thumbs, and just as easily as checking the thumbs up or down

I know the thumbs will push images into favourites but it doesn't give me as much feedback as I'd like whilst being ultra user friendly

any chance?:dunno :D

Problem: more than one group of people want to see a different selection of the same event's photos.
-Currently to make this happen I need to create more than one gallery and either upload the different sets of the same shoot to different galleries ( takes a long time to upload and SM ends up with more server space used than necessary) or make a copy of each individual shot that needs to be in the new gallery before I can move them to the new gallery

Solution: if I could 'make virtual copies of many' I could select the images I want to have copied to another gallery in one window and all at once and then move them all from the same window

There would ideally be no need to make actual copies just virtul cpopies thus not taking up extra room on SMs servers? It would also be good if that one window displayed thumbs and stars ratings to facilitate choosing which pics need moving

Good idea? or not?

Hi all,

It would be great if we could have a "guest" class added to the body tag when the guest account is being used. This way we can kind of customize our own "permissions" of the guest account without affecting the general loggedIn class. We could remove buttons and such that will confuse guests or maybe hid stuff we don't want to let them know is there :wink.

This shouldn't be too hard, should it? :dunno

Thanks,

Kevin Helton

Awseome idea!

It is probably possible to use javascript to examine the cookie that is set on a guest login and add the class to the body tag yourself with javascript, but that would require a little sleuthing of the cookie.

It would be cool if we can incorporate one of the creative commons licenses to our pictures and galleries for download.

If possible, this would work with integration with imagestamper.com

I'm new to smugmug.
I'm sure this has been discussed here, but, as I don't know what nomenclature is used, I'm not sure what to search for.

Does SmugMug have, or intend to have, a feature where I can add annotations to parts of an image?
For example, I want to associate a specific keyword with a specific face
or add a comment about the dress that someone is wearing in the photo
so that when the viewer hovers over the photo, the annotations appear

Thank you

Greetings DGrinners!

I did a forum search and came up empty handed, so how about adding a function to SmugMug that allows a direct upload of photos from a cell phone? There are similar features on sites such as YouTube...

Thanks in advance for the consideration!

When is the Iphone interface going to be fixed so the REST OF THE WORLD can use it?
None of the categories are links on a non-Iphone device and the
galleries pick is totally useless with many many many galleries to page
through.

The visited link color is dark purple on black background and almost
impossible to see.

Otherwise everything else seems to work fine including keywords and
search. Except log in doesn't work.

non-iphone interface
With right click protection on all of the thumbs and photos are the blank gifs.
Log in submit button missing and <enter> doesn't work.

My number 1 request: Option for Drop Shipping!

What do you mean by drop shipping? Usually that phrase means that items can be shipped directly from the factory/source to the customer and that is what happens when a customer orders prints.

...

Allen Allen... haven't you heard the first commandment of the iPhone?

Thou Shalt Have No Other Phones Before Me!

:-}

But semi-seriously -- c'mon, Don bought iPhones for everybody in the office. How much time do you think they're going to spend tweaking their fancy iPhone UI so that it works on anything else? For one thing, they'd actually have to *own* one of those inferior phones. :P

You know, I wrote an alternate UI for Phanfare because it displayed so poorly on my Wii. Turns out that it worked well for my poor little Palm Centro as well, and lots of other non-iPhone phones. Heck, before Phanfare came out with their iPhone-specific UI, Fan-Phan (my alt UI) was the only way to reasonably view your photos on an iPhone.

Perhaps I should look into porting the code to work with SmugMug galleries.

But you're right. It wouldn't take a lot
